Upward Bound Mission Statement
The Upward Bound program at Eastern Michigan University prepares students for academic
excellence, global citizenship and lifelong learning by providing academic support and tutoring, assisting with college
and career plans and by exposing students to diverse cultural, recreational and artistic expressions of life.
Upward Bound will foster personal growth by encouraging students to be competent civic-minded leaders,
to take pride in themselves and the world around them and to realize their fullest potential as individuals.
Philosophy of services
- We believe in creating a comprehensive, rigorous, pre-college program where students are constantly challenged to do/be their best
- We believe in nurturing each student's intellectual, social, emotional and spiritual development in fun and creative ways
- We believe students can arrive on time and meet all deadlines in a timely manner
- We believe students can question, critic, analyze, challenge and negotiate in positive ways that promote growth and understanding
- We believe students can raise their cumulative GPA by .1 each year and raise their CTBS test scores by 5% annually
- We believe students can set goals and attain them
- We believe students will face obstacles, learn from their challenges and succeed
- We believe in proactive self empowerment
- We believe in each student's ability to make positive choices
- We believe in each student's ability to be organizational geniuses
- We believe in the importance of resolving conflicts peacefully
- We believe in the importance of diversity and that each student should respect and honor people from diverse ethnic, religious and economic backgrounds
